Chagga Cultural tour

The Chagga are a Bantu – speaking indigenous community and the third largest ethnic group in Tanzania. They traditionally live in the southern and eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru and near Moshi, Kilimanjaro region. The Chagga belong to different clans (a group of people of common descend) and ruled by Mangi (Chief). The area was divided into independent chiefdoms and vegetation is varied, the lowest plains from the bushland where maize, thatch grass and fodder are grown. Next lies the coffee and Banana belt, each Chagga family has its own homestead in the banana grove. Their relative wealth comes from the favorable climate of the area and successful agricultural methods practiced for thousands of year

OUR ITINERARY

 

In the morning we will pick you up from the hotel after breakfast and drive to the slope of Mountain Kilimanjaro (Africa highest mountain), here is where Chagga people live.

 

On arrival at the Chagga village you will be guided by a local farmer and you will experience the Chagga traditional process of coffee production from bean to cup, your tour starts with berry picking in the farm where you will be taught how the local pick the coffee berries. You will then be shown where the locals peel and dry the coffee seeds, roast, grind them into a fine powder. You will boil the coffee and have a taste of your own brewed coffee. We pause for lunch in an unforgettable natural and beautiful waterfall then after you will continue with tree and plant identification. Late afternoon, we depart for the hotel for dinner.
